Across Africa, however, the conditions that shape how technology is used, ranging from infrastructure and culture to language and access to information present unique opportunities for how intelligent systems can be designed and applied. These realities call for an approach that begins with context, not assumptions.

Visolab is an applied AI research lab focused on research, data gathering, and building AI systems grounded in African context. The work centers on understanding real problems, collecting meaningful and representative data, and developing intelligent systems that operate effectively within local constraints. This includes building and refining small, efficient language models designed to perform reliably in these environments. Rather than generalizing across settings, the approach is rooted in observing how people live, work, and interact with technology across different contexts.
